character name: Genim 'Stiles' Stilinski
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Timeline: Season 2
character's age: 17

powers, skills, pets and equipment: - A maglite torch and possibly a Swiss Army knife if he's allowed two. A bottle supply of Adderall. He plays lacrosse regularly, though he's not very good. The most useful skill he's gained from that is probably the ability to run away. He's recently found out he has some magical ability. It seems to work mostly through focusing thoughts and belief. He's only used it once though and had no training. I intend to play it as a latent ability at first, if someone casts a spell on magic users, he will be affected, but he can't cast spells himself. I'd like to develop it into a straight forward magical ability eventually. (Spell casting, potions, charms etc. that he'd need to learn and practice.)

canon history: Stiles' mother died at some point when he was a child, since then it's been just him and his father, (the Sheriff of Beacon Hills). He's lived all his life in Beacon Hills and knows the area (and most of the town gossip) pretty well. His childhood friend is Scott McCall who lives nearby. Together they formed the loser section of the high school hierarchy. He's nurtured a crush on Lydia Martins, the school's Queen Bee for probably as long as he's known her. Along with Scott, he's been the go-to punching bag for Lydia's boyfriend and resident jock, Jackson Whittemore.

The series begins with Scott being bitten by the Peter Hale, the Alpha werewolf. Stiles stands by him through the change, researches and helps out in every way he can. Together, and along with the somewhat reluctant beta wolf, Derek Hale, they take on the Alpha threat. They navigate the dangers of Argents, a family of hunters, the daughter of whom is Scott's new girlfriend. (Awkward family dinners? You have no idea). Eventually they expose the Alpha's true identify, and Derek kills him. Stiles escapes the season with his sanity and humanity intact.

Season two sees Derek forming his own pack; Peter rising from the dead; A supernatural menace serial killing its way through town; Granddad Argent turning out to be the craziest Argent of the lot and Stiles getting his first experience of using magic.

In terms of how this has impacted on Stiles, his social circle has rapidly and unexpectedly expanded to include a range of different characters. Scott, his best friend, has become increasingly focused upon his girlfriend, and started drawing away from Stiles. Stiles has had to start keeping all sorts of secrets from his father, straining a once close relationship. And most importantly, life and death stakes are now quite literal. His worries no longer end at missed coursework deadlines, or being shouted at by Coach. He's had to fight for his life, for his friends lives and he's had to be prepared to kill.

Wiki

personality: Stiles is expressive, talkative and physical. He can have a short attention span, but can likewise get very focused on irrelevant pieces of information. (For a test he wrote up the complete history of male circumcision. Unfortunately it was an Economy test.). He can talk and act without thinking, and in general can be somewhat tactless and impulsive. He's on medication for his ADHD, though he's not particularly regular with his dosage.

Stiles often lets his mouth run on while making mental leaps, resulting in random, scattered dialogue that jumps from one place to the other. Combined with his short attention span and TV-Tropes style memory for random information, his speech can be a mess of subject hopping and pop culture references.

There's a bit of canon back and forth over the subject of his grades, but if we allow for his ADHD, it can fit into a pattern: When he's interested in something he will stay up all hours and research it exhaustively. (Like werewolves, for example.) If it's something he's uninterested in, (like... Chemistry) he will do absolutely anything he can to avoid it. When he puts the effort in, he can get good grades and in general do well. His academic shortcomings aren't from lack of knowledge, but lack of interest. (The fact he slightly hates his Chemistry teacher doesn't help).

He's expressive and tends to speak with his hands. He's also got that classic teenage flail down -- all elbows and knees -- and isn't really the best coordinated (which is probably why he's constantly benched in lacrosse). For a human teen, he's quite fit, however he's completed outclassed by his super-human friends (and enemies).

The only piece of magic he cast was a boundary spell. He ran out of the ash that was meant to circle the building. He focused his thoughts on 'seeing' the circle as closed, opened his eyes and tada! The circle was closed! While this ability may be built upon in later seasons, right now it's hasn't really been referenced, and Stiles himself seems to show little interest in it.

He's a basically friendly guy, he's certainly not taciturn or standoffish, but he's not great with people. He can be tactless - like his constant questioning of whether he was 'attractive to gay men'. A question no doubt asked in the spirit of genuine enquiry, but probably not the kind of thing the school's (only?) openly gay character wanted shouted down the corridor.

He's loyal to those he's close to, but that still only really means Scott and his dad. He can hold grudges, and for all the fanon Derek/Stiles shipping, on the show he's still more inclined to abandon the werewolves to their fate. Scott is more likely to be the one to sympathise and want to intercede on their behalf. That said, Stiles goes along with and often takes his own initiative when aiding the pack. While he said he was happy to let Jackson meet a sticky end, he knew his suggestion would be shot down. I'm inclined to think he never really would have gone through with it, he simply wanted it made clear that he didn't like Jackson. Likewise when Derek is poisoned by wolfsbane, for all his talk about abandoning Derek on the street, he was ready to saw through Derek's arm to save him. Most tellingly, when the Kanima (supernatural serial killer) tried to attack two pack members, Stiles pushed them both behind him, despite being a frail, weapon-less human. His instinctive move was to protect, not run.

This basically boils down to - he'll stand by you, but he might not like you very much.

You could possibly explain some of this from his relationship with his father. He 'mothers' him, and does his best to take care of him - shown mostly in his policing of his food intake (fast food is out, salads are in). Also in his general desire to keep the supernatural world secret from him, as oppose to confiding in him and asking for help. And ill advised decision, perhaps, but an understandable one. Perhaps stemming from the loss of his mother at an early age, Stiles doesn't easily let go of people. He'll do whatever it takes to protect his father, to protect his best friend, and if push comes to shove, he goes above and beyond to help even the people he doesn't particularly like.

His father is a role model, a protector of the people, an honourable example of law enforcement. The kind of person who would go out of his way to help another. Stiles definitely holds him in regard and wanting to emulate his dad isn't an unrealistic desire. That doesn't necessarily relate to 'a career in law enforcement' but more generally as being a person who takes it upon himself to protect others, rather than passing that responsibility on to someone else. The fact that he's semi-raised himself, (what with his dad being absent due to work a good deal) probably only reinforces the independent, self-reliant streak.

More recently his relationship with his father has become quite strained. We haven't really delved into it in-show, it may come up more in later seasons, but in true Buffy style, the secret keeping and apparent truancy isn't scoring him any points with his dad. Not only that, but Sitles' involvement in the supernatural is putting his father in danger. Stiles definitely feels guilty over this, but as long as he sees secrecy as the safest option, nothing is going to change.

Likewise, to go back to Scott, the defining friendship in Stiles' life has undergone a major change, with Scott spending the majority of time with his girlfriend, and if not with her, then on wolf business. Admittedly there haven't been major repercussions in-show, but a certain amount of abandonment issues, and possibly desire for a partner of his own, could have arisen. Stiles' position in the pack is tenuous, he's not a wolf and he's not the significant other of a wolf. He's not even a hunter, he's effectively only there because he refuses to be anywhere else, and that has to be something he's aware of. If he left, would any of them try to get him back?

Stiles seems pretty self-aware when it comes to his status. He doesn't even try asking Lydia out, because he's already sure what the answer will be. But he's not shy, and if he needs to approach someone, or even just feels like talking to them, he will. (Danny being the obvious example, but he's accosted Jackson at times.) He doesn't seem to dislike his life either, it was Scott, not Stiles who was obsessed with doing better at Lacrosse and presumably climbing the social ladder through sports. Stiles never expected, or attempted to escape his low-rung position. And more importantly, when Peter offers him the bite in season 1, Stiles rejects it. He's not looking for a way out of his life. Sure some parts of it suck, but its his life. He'll keep it, thank you very much.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Stiles has already come into contact with the supernatural. He's aware of another world existing alongside his own. Hunters and Werewolves and all sorts of supernatural beasties living alongside the normal human one. To step into an entirely different universe, yes it would mess with him, but I think he'd also be able to deal with it better than an ignorant human might.

He's already got a bt of magical ability and I'd like the chance to explore that as a Scorched ability, he's not so interested in it in canon, while that might change in later seasons, I can take advantage of Scorched to explore it in my own way.

In canon, as I said above, he's had to fight for his life and others'. He's had to help kill a man, he's kept secrets, he's lied, in general he's had to do a fair amount of horrific dark stuff, and watch a lot of horrific dark stuff been done. I'm not going to say he's completely healthy and sane. He's likely not and he may well break down in-game, especially since he's cut off from his world. But he'll get up again. He'll keep going, because that's the kind of guy he is.

[Stiles is leaning forwards on the edge of his chair.]
Hey, so, hey. Hi. I mean. [He waves too vigorously, overbalances and falls.]

Uh. Wow, smooth. [Getting back up.] So... I'm Stiles. And I, uh. What's- Who are you? If you wanna tell me. If you don't that's, fine. Creepy but fine. I can deal with creepy, Ohoh, I know creepy.

Not in that way. I'm not creepy. I'm- Oh my God someone stop me now.

Third Person Sample:

This place was cool. Seriously cool. There were flying Zeppelins in the air, and every third person was wearing goggles. He'd seen one of those old fashioned bikes with one wheel massively bigger than the other a couple of streets back. It didn't exactly look comfortable but still. pretty damn cool. Scott would be so jealous when he got back.

Because he would get back. He would. That was a thing that was going to happen. No question. He wasn't worried. Clearly everyone else as doing it wrong, and he'd just. Do it right. Simple.

Stiles turns the next corner, and there in front of him is the Door. A massive flickering gap in the stone wall. There are a couple of stalls along the side, a few shifty looking
individuals lurking. What self-respecting thief would turn down a steady supply of unconscious people to pickpocket?

Stiles tries to blend in and fails spectacularly. He doesn't bother trying to look harmless, that's pretty much a given.

He approaches the Door slowly. It's almost beautiful, all those flickering images. Different worlds. Awe inspiring. He's breathing shallowly. He's close enough now that the light from the images reflect on his skin. He reaches out a hand. His fingers, only inches away from the bright, moving surface. Two inches, one, a half. Then he's touching, passing through...

... Stumbling and falling out the other side. The road continues straight before him. More stalls on this side, and the pickpockets are pointing and laughing.

Anything else? Nada
